Abstract

Learning photography is closely related to the use of lighting. Photography studios provide electronic lighting devices that can be adjusted as needed so that taking pictures for commercial products is easy. In addition to studio lights, DSLR cameras are also available and can be used by Graphic Design Students at University. The Covid-19 pandemic that has hit the country has hindered the implementation of practice in the studio. The author thinks, and looks for other solutions as an alternative, so that the target achievement of the course is still met. After doing various trials, the author finally found a studio replacement solution. Taking pictures can use any type of digital camera, even a smartphone camera and can be done from home. This study will examine the irradiation of
the engineered window using a modified reflector as a substitute for standard reflector lamps and soft boxes in the studio. This engineered natural lighting will be applied to textured and translucent product shots. This experimental research will find out how natural lighting can be used to photograph textured objects and translucent objects and the quality of the results is the same as the lighting in the studio. Besides being cheap, this lighting technique can also overcome the problems of using a photo studio. The physical distancing policy imposed by the government to stop the spread of Covid-19 will no longer hinder learning photography. The photoshoot with natural light engineering techniques is then evaluated for its feasibility as a replacement solution for lighting techniques in the studio by comparing the results.
